Internet job search pioneer starts over | tennessean.com | The Tennessean.

I find this to be interesting because it is not a significant improvement in the method of the traditional job boards, including the one that Bill Warren started.

The crux of this new system will be to have a system where firms will have their own unique URL with the .jobs suffix tied to their job site.  For example, Dollar General would be dollargeneral.jobs.

That makes some sense, but the model falls apart for me when you see the cost of entry.  Large employers will pay $15,000 for all of the “bells and whistles” while small employers will be allowed to line up at the back door for a about $125 per year.  The site also give mention to the fact that small employers can “work through their state employment agencies, which post jobs online at no charge.”  Big Deal!  Why do they need this system anyway?

Job boards are passe’.  Smart jobseekers are using social media to find their best roles and they are engaging in conversations with employers to do so.

Monster, Careerbuilder, Hot Jobs and other like minded job boards are the “Betamax” of the employment market.  Some people will continue to go there, but the best and brightest will use the power of social networks, especially LinkedIn, to find the best jobs.

Supporting charity through Social Media

leave a comment »

scoutinglogoI am a big supporter of charities, especially the Boy Scouts and the Boys and Girls Club, so anything I read about helping charities gets my attention.

The blog post at this link talks about a number of ways you can use Social Media to support charities.  Some of the methods used are very easy to implement, while others are a little more complex.  I find this to be an interesting application for social technology and I look forward to even more applications as  time passes.

Who knows what else we can use Social Media and Social Networks for…

Top 10 sites to find a job

lightbulbI am attaching a link from a post that Dan Schwabel of Mashable made several months ago. I found this to be a very credible list and I am passing it along as a service to those on the receiving end of my blog.

I will never pretend to have all of the answers and I will always give credit when I use someone else’s materials.  I hope this post regarding job sites helps you in your search.

I hope this provides some value to you, especially if you are on the job market!

How Facebook is Killing MySpace

leave a comment »

facebook buttonI encourage you to read this article to learn just what is transpiring in the world of Social Media and Networks.  MySpace used to be the king of social networks when looking solely at volume in the USA, but Facebook has not only taken that role, but it is also putting some distance between itself and the dreaded foe.myspace

Here is a short clip from the article to quantify what is happening:

In the past year, Facebook’s U.S. audience has grown 97%, to 70.28 million users, while MySpace’s U.S. traffic has declined nearly 5%, to 70.24 million users, according to measurement company comScore. (Microsoft, the publisher of MSN Money, owns a small share of Facebook.)

As a Boomer I see many of my friends heading to the Facebook world and the multiple functions that FB affords make it a quick study.

I’ll be watching this race closely-you should too!

wavingflagI wanted to think of something that you might enjoy for this great holiday, and I found this great clip of Ray Charles singing America The Beautiful.

This takes me back to a time when our country was full of people who cared about the future of our land.  I pray that we will gain back the pride that we once had.

Have  a blessed holiday!

Twitter Rolls Out UI Changes To Simplify Your Social Connections-from TechCrunch

by MG Siegler on June 30, 2009

Twitter has just quietly rolled out a set of changes to its user interface on the “Following” and “Followers” sections of its website. These changes will clearly make it easier to manage who you follow as well as take actions, such as @replying someone or direct messaging them, directly from the page.

There are two new views for looking at these areas. “List” is a compact list of the followers, while “Expanded” offers more details including that user’s last tweet and their real name and location. On the Followers page, there is also a button that allows for one-click following of users who already follow you.

What’s interesting about these icons is that they appear to look exactly like icons that Apple uses for OS X — including some of the ones on the iPhone. Could this mean that we’re about to see a revamped mobile version of the Twitter site? Who knows, but it could sure use an overhaul.

Sim Center in Chattanooga

with 2 comments

utchattanoogaThe University of Tennessee in Chattanooga announced the Sim Center several months ago and I think you will find the video shown here to be a good description of the value and need that this project brings.

Our country is lagging in the production of engineering and technical talent and we need to take action immediately to remain competitive with our world neighbors. The Sim Center is a step in that direction.
