Giving Back
It is interesting to be a 49 year old man with a 21 year old mind. Don’t take that the wrong way, but as my body ages my mind doesn’t seem to change much, except for the learning that takes place from experience. It is fun to find ways to organize and process this experience and several books have helped me along the way, such as Halftime and others.
I have been extremely fortunate to have had a multitude of experiences in the non-profit and community based arena. I won’t go into ALL of that now (more blog material), but I will touch upon my most recent experience today. Last evening I began a new service/ministry by working with my church to support our Jail Ministry. Of all the people I know, I might have been the last one to think of me doing this. I felt the call by getting to know other men who do this work and watching how they live their lives. I’ll save the names of these guys for now, but they know who they are, and so does the Lord.
I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into our meeting area last night, but what I gave was far surpassed by what I received. With few exceptions I was thanked at least once, if not twice, by every man who attended our service. They voluntarily chose to come hear the Word of God and I was so humbled to be one of the two there last night to help provide this message. It will not be the last time I am there.
One last thought-the richest experiences for me have always been from moving forward into work that I was not totally sure about at the beginning. There are too many examples for today. Just remember this, when you hear the call-answer it. He will be with you every step of the way.
