Business Fundamentals
AS a father of two college-aged sons I am in an interesting time in my life. I can remember when I was in the same period of life they are now experiencing and I sometimes have an opportunity to share something with them that might be of value. These little snippets are usually based on an episode from my past where I bungled a situation. They have the opportunity to learn from my experiences, especially the ones that didn’t work out so well.
My oldest son is now in a semester-long internship with an internationally known equpiment firm and he seems very excited and engaged in what he is doing. It is very refreshing and rewarding to hear the energy and enthusiasm in the voice of a young man when he shares about his work experiences and the opportunities he is being given. He really is getting into the workplace!
This brings me back to a lunch meeting I attended a few years ago where a local business leader gave a list of basic business fundamentals that he felt would lead to success. The list goes something like this:
1. Be in the right place
2. Be on time
3. Dress appropriately
4. there is a fourth item-it just escapes me now
This seems like such a simple list, but I can think back to many times where I would hit only 2 of the 3 and afterward realized the loss from not meeting every item on the list.
I will talk more about this list in the coming days. I hope you are here on time and dressed appropriately as we go through the list.
